Biography
임성남 전 외교부 차관은 2021년 12월까지 약 40년간 외교 일선에서 근무하는 동안, 한미동맹관계와 관련된 업무들을 지속적으로 다루어 왔다. 임 전차관은 주미 대사관에서 두 차례 근무하였을 뿐만 아니라, 외교부 본부에서도 북미 3과장, 북미 1과장, 한미안보협력관 등의 보직을 역임하였다. 또 북핵담당대사 및 한반도평화교섭본부장으로 근무시에도 한미간 정책 조율을 가장 중요한 정책 목표의 하나로 추구했었다.
2015년 10월부터 2018년 9월까지 약 3년간 외교부 제1차관으로 재직하면서도 당시 앤토니 블링컨 국무부 부장관과 한미 양자 협의 또는 한미일 3자 협의 등을 통해 한미간 협력 강화를 위해 노력하였다.
임 전차관은 주영 대사, 주아세안 대사, 주중 공사 등도 역임하였으며, 주유엔 대표부, 주타이뻬이 대표부 등에서도 근무하였다. 또 미국 하버드대 정치학과에서 석사학위를 취득하였으며, 일본 동경대학 법학부에서 객원 연구원 생활도 하였다.
Throughout his 40-year diplomatic career until December 2021, Sungnam LIM was constantly involved in the ROK-US alliance in one way or another. He spent about 12 years working or studying in the cities such as Washington DC, New York or Cambridge MA. At the Foreign Ministry, he served as Senior Coordinator for ROK-US Security Cooperation as well as Director of North America Division I and III. While he was serving as Ambassador for the North Korean Nuclear Issue and then Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, the ROK-US coordination was always on the top of his agenda. Recently, when he was First Vice Foreign Minister from October 2015 to September 2018, he also focused on the ROK-US cooperation with the then Deputy Secretary Tony Blinken bilaterally or trilaterally with Japan. In addition to the US, Ambassador LIM served in London, Beijing, Taipei and Jakarta, and studied in Tokyo.
