
Biography
Joo Hai Kang was born in Busan in 1953 and has become deaf due to measles since 1955. He graduated from Seoul National Elementary, Middle, and High School for the Deaf and studied at Seoul Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He flew to the USA to study at Wesley Theological Seminary and graduated from that school with a Master of Divinity degree in 1982. He was ordained as the first deaf Presbyterian minister at the Seoul Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Korea in October 1982. He served the Youngnak Presbyterian Church of the Deaf as assistant pastor and senior pastor respectively for 17 years and also served two Methodist Deaf churches in the USA from 2001 to 2008. Being not satisfied with involving in deaf ministry, he had been actively involved with the Korean Association of the Deaf as a board member and also with the World Federation of the Deaf as a board member. He has been a board member of the Korean Society of Sign Language Studies and is involved in the compilation of the dictionary of Korean Sign Language. He authored books including ‘Who is the Deaf Person?’(1989) and ‘The 70 Years History of the Korean Association.
