Biography

Professor Smith is Professional Research Associate, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London; Professor Emerita of International Security, Cranfield University, UK; and Member of the Global Futures Council on Korea World Economic Forum. Professor Smith received her PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and has published extensively on the domestic and international politics of North Korea over the last 30 years; including on UN sanctions and the DPRK (Critical Asian Studies, 52:2, 182-203, 2020); and ‘North Korea: Markets and Military Rule (Cambridge University Press, 2015; Korean translation, Changbi, 2017; She has been awarded two competitive fellowships at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (2012/2013 and 2019/20). Professor Smith has held fellowships at the East-West Center, Honolulu (2008 and 2015), Kyushu University (2010), the United States Institute of Peace (2001/2002) and was a Fulbright scholar at Stanford University (1994/1995). Professor Smith regularly briefs government agencies, e.g. in the UK, the US and South Korea, and is a frequent broadcaster for the global media on North Korea, where she lived and worked for United Nations humanitarian organizations for two years, and from where she earned a (still valid) North Korean driving license.
