
Biography
Gwisook Gwon is a research associate at the Tamla Culture Research Institute at Jeju National University. She taught sociology at Jeju National University from 1994 to 2016. She has been interested in state violence, collective memory, and gender for about 20 years. She has steadily published books and articles on the Jeju Massacre since 2001. Her 2006 book, Gieog-ui Jeongchi or The Politics of Memory (Seoul: Munhakgwa Jiseongsa), was designated an Excellent Book of the Year by the Korean National Academy of Sciences. Her recent works about the Jeju Massacre and gender have appeared in Tamla Munwha〔Tamla Culture〕(2014) and in 4.3-gwa Yeoksa〔History of Jeju 4.3〕(2011). A book chapter about resisting the remilitarisation of Jeju has appeared in Under Occupation (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2013). She is currently working on a monograph about the Jeju Massacre in the English language.
