Notwithstanding the global economic downturn and security threats including nuclear proliferation and terrorism, East Asia has been pursuing prosperity through economic cooperation by virtue of geographic proximity. However, security issues such as rows over past history and territorial disputes have been obstacles in bringing about peace in East Asia. Moreover, with the US presidential election fast approaching, the strategic competition between China and the US, which bears a close resemblance to the Cold War, has been intensified in many areas. Worsening of the US-China relations has significantly increased tensions in the region as well as weighed heavily as a political and economic burden on neighboring countries in addition to the pandemic. Can the current problems in East Asia related to US-China strategic competition be resolved and peace in East Asia be established? This session will examine the flashpoints in East Asia arising from the US-China rivalry and look for ways to bring about peace and prosperity in the region.
