Like the rest of the World, East Asia is now facing an unprecedented economic and health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed dramatically the regional economic and trade landscape, causing a near halt of the regional supply system and cessation of intraregional FDI and tourism. In addition, the on-going trade and technology war between the United States and China has added a great deal of uncertainty, including the US EPN initiative. Against further fallouts of COVID-19, most East Asian countries tend to be inward-looking. However, for a sustainable and dynamic economic path, East Asia needs to safeguard a liberal trade and investment order for resilient recovery. The ongoing East Asian economic crisis is also juxtaposed with new opportunities. Post-COVID-19, intra-regional digital connectivity is likely to be accelerated through e-commerce and the digital transformation of regional economies. What is a collective action agenda to control the Pandemic crisis for East Asian economic recovery? What measures does East Asia need to ensure a more rule-based system for intra-regional trading and investment? How should be pursued an early effectuation of RCEP and expanded CPTPP during the current and post-covid era? How should East Asia navigate the increasingly intensifying US-China trade and technology war? How do East Asian economies prepare for digital cooperation? This session attempts to answer these challenging questions.
