Entering into its second term after the conclusion of the 19th Party Congress, the Xi Jinping administration is now set for a long-term grip on power with its recent constitutional amendment. The recent summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Xi is also likely to affect the results of the forthcoming inter-Korean and US-North Korea summit. Given that China has been pushing for a line of peaceful development and new international relations as their banner policies in the 19th Party Congress, one can notice the efforts made in ameliorating relations with South Korea, which had frozen over in the past two years on the issue of the THAAD anti-missile defense system. Furthermore, China, conscious of the international community's view of China acting as North Korea's patron, has actively participated in applying sanctions and increasing pressure on the North. As China has consolidated its position through its rapid growth as a great power on the rise while the demand for its responsible role is also increasing, this session examines how its policies towards the Korean peninsula will unfold.
