Multilateralism has never come easy in international politics, but it is even more difficult now that the U.S. seems to be distancing itself from it. Nowhere is the impact of this change more conspicuous than in UNESCO, which has lost more than 20% of its entire budget due to U.S. withdrawal. Such a setback has even led many to question whether UNESCO's mandate, which is to build lasting peace through education, science, and culture, is still relevant today. As a middle-power country that relies on multilateral diplomacy to make its voice heard, and as a Member State of UNESCO that ranks 13th in assessed contributions, the Republic of Korea must now ask the hard questions in its relations with the troubled organization. To such ends, this session seeks to deepen dialogue on what form ROK-UNESCO relations must take in the long run, and on what UNESCO's future should look like.
