The changes in the global system caused by the climate crisis have been occurring as rapidly as the nation's economic growth over the past half-century, and the great acceleration of the climate crisis has warned that there will be a situation that we humans have never experienced before. The rapid changes in CO2 levels observed in Mauna Loa in Hawaii since 1958 began to warn people all over the world of a great disaster that is called climate crisis. The current climate crisis(heat waves, sea level rise, and floods) has become an upcoming threat that was ignored in the past.
As the severity of the climate crisis spread, the general public began to recognize its seriousness, such as the frequent occurrence of natural disasters(floods, droughts, and the spread of infectious diseases) over the past two decades. However, skepticism about the climate crisis has also grown recently due to the economic recession and refugee problems faced by many countries around the world.
In response, Paris Agreement was adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015, however, it is not sufficient to establish effective climate crisis governance. Therefore, this year’s Jeju Forum session will once again recognize the seriousness of climate crisis and seek strategic approaches and action plans to reinforce climate crisis governance.
