Al Gore, an environmental activist and former U.S. Vice President speaks on the challenges and opportunities facing Jeju, a carbon-free island of Northeast Asia. He is known for his book <An Inconvenient Truth> and has received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 along with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work in spreading awareness of climate change. The movement in combating climate change is looking gloomy with the inauguration of President Trump as the United States is set to pull out of the Paris Agreement. Meanwhile, China is actively jumping into the renewable energy industry by introducing new policies to build green infrastructure and end the use of coal. The antagonistic claims on environmental policies will bring about chaos in the international society. The UN World Meteorological Organization stated that 2016 was the hottest year on record. The world is facing new challenges of rising sea levels and natural catastrophes caused by climate change. In the era of global cooperation and commitment, Al Gore will speak on whether if sustainable development is possible with national interests playing a conflicting role
