The liberal international order defended by the US and the EU since the end of WWII seems to start to shatter, notably with Brexit and more recently with the Trump presidency. The rising support for populist parties disrupting the politics of many Western societies seems to be not extraordinary phenomenon anymore. That leaves us with worrying trends. The US is surely inclining towards a protectionist stance, already withdrawing from the TPP. The EU will remain one of the front-runners for the open market, but it certainly becomes weaker as an institution. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping has delivered a strong defense of globalization, showing that Beijing will seek to usurp the US’s traditional role as the champion of free trade and open markets. Our session aims to preview whether Asia would be able to defend the global open market and elaborate on their strategic policies for this goal.
