Currently, insecurity and conflict coexist in East Asia. The growth of China, the economic recession in Japan, and the rebalancing policy of the United States have influenced the security of many countries in the region. Korea and China have suffered conflicts with Japan over history. China and Japan are locked in a confrontation in a territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands (called Diaoyudao Islands by China,) which caused the suspension of trilateral summits for two years. The nuclear arms test by North Korea and its missile launches also make the security situation in the region more volatile. Recently, there have been moves to improve the ties between Korea, China, and Japan. However, the fundamental causes of conflict remain intact. It is high time to prevent clashes and create the means to stabilize the region. In recognition of the need for a new cooperative relationship among three East Asian countries, experts from Korea, China, and Japan will discuss concrete measures to accomplish this.
