For the last three decades, the prediction that the 21st century will be the “Asian century” has become a cliché among the intellectuals in East Asia. There is indeed a dynamic transformation of regional order taking place in East Asia: the emergence of China and India, the reemergence of the U.S., and the Japanese conversion into a military power. However, no one can provide a clear picture of what is the future shape of the Asian century. In the concept of the Asian century, there are opportunities and threats: the world’s factory, the engine for the global economy, militarized confrontation from the Cold War order, and new territorial disputes in the post-Cold War era. This session will ask for wisdom concerning the future of the Asian century.
