The erosion of the U.S.-led liberal economic order has brought the multilateral trading system to the brink of collapse after having served as the pillar of the world trade order for decades. As it is no longer able to rely on the multilateral trading system for continued economic growth, countries in the Asian region are expected to face increased unilateral pressure from the U.S. and other countries pursuing protectionist motives. As tensions are rising in the Asia Pacific region, and the U.S.-China trade conflict is not expected to be resolved any time soon, how should Asian countries prepare against these changes in the international economic order? This session aims to deal with these issues from the perspectives of international trade law, politics, and economy, including the desirable direction for operating the CPTPP and RCEP, which are expected to serve as the mechanism for regional economic integration in the Asian region.
