Jeju's Alternative Option and Strategy For Actualizing Peace and Human Rights City

Human rights are a universal value of human beings to be sustained and succeeded by the people. It has been, however, a trend to be devaluated and excluded, and even more lost in the course of historical development by political, economic, and socio-cultural factors. Even if people live within a democratic society, it would be meaningless to talk about social development, welfare, peace as well as happiness as long as the blind spot of human rights exists in society as a whole. In particular, Jeju 4․3 faced its 70th anniversary in 2018 year is a typical example of human rights disappearance and even genocide in both Jeju and Korean history. Stemming from its historical meaning and legacy, Jeju will have to secure human rights and sustain human dignity to rebuild the world peace island in itself. To direct a peaceful island and human rights society toward a human rights city, it is needed a timely social discourse for Jeju to rethink diverse practical strategies and alternative options for human rights promotion policies in the 13th Jeju Forum.
