Drawing a Roadmap for Peace Regime on the Korean Peninsula
Denuclearization session track organized
Following the inter-Korean summit talks on April 27, a possible peace regime on the Koreapeninsula is drawing the world’s attention, amid rife speculations and views on thedenuclearization issue. The upcoming Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity from June 26 to28 will focus on the denuclearization of and peace on the Korean peninsula in 11 sessionsabout the issue on a single track. This would, therefore, provide a chance for those who areinterested in the possibility of a peace regime on the Korean peninsula to gain an in-depthoverview of the issue.The sessions on June 26, the first day of the Forum, are “Strategy to Pursue Denuclearizationand a Peace Regime on the Korean Peninsula” organized by the Korea Institute for NationalUnification; “The Summits and Beyond: Continuity and Change of North Korea” organized bythe East Asia Foundation; “Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the DomesticPolitics of Neighboring Countries: Focusing on the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia” organizedby Jeju Peace Institute and The Korean Association of International Studies; and “At aCrossroads: Northeast Asia and the North Korean Nuclear Predicament” organized by theKorea Foundation for Advanced Studies.In the session organized by the East Asia Foundation, Jung Se-hyun, former minister ofunification of the R.O.K, Lee Jong-seok, former minister of unification of the R.O.K, Jin Jingyi,Professor Emeritus at Peking University, Masao Okonogi, Professor Emeritus, KeioUniversity; and John Merrill, former head of the Northeast Asia Division of the Bureau ofIntelligence and Research at the US Department of State; will discuss how Korea canmaintain cooperation with its neighboring countries.Three sessions will be held on June 27. They are “The Summits and Beyond: Denuclearizationof the Korean Peninsula” (East Asia Foundation); “Global Advisory Committee's Session:What Comes After KJU’s Meetings with Xi, Moon, and Trump?” (Jeju Peace Institute); and“Special Dialogue between Prof. Moon Chung-in & Dr. Philip Zelikow: Creating a PeaceRegime on the Korean Peninsula” (Jeju Peace Institute).In the session, “The Summits and Beyond: Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” KimSung-Hwan, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Joseph Yun, former United StatesSpecial Representative for North Korea Policy and Jeffrey Feltman, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs will discuss strategies to ease tension over nuclear issueson the Korean peninsula and around the world, and to establish a regional peaceregime. The “Global Advisory Committee's Session” organized by the Jeju Peace Institute andparticipated in by Marty Natalegawa, former Indonesian foreign minister; ShivshankarMenon, former national security adviser of India; John Ikenberry, professor of politics andinternational affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs atPrinceton University; Yan Xuetong, Dean of the Institute of International Relations, TsinghuaUniversity; and Chang Daljoong, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and InternationalRelations at Seoul National University. This panel seeks to assess the major achievements ofthree recent summit meetings and to discuss the future prospects for inter-Korean and U.S.-DPRK relations, not to mention Chinese-DPRK relations. Moon Chung-in, special advisor toPresident Moon Jae-in for foreign affairs and security; and Philip Zelikow, former counselorof the United States Department of State, will hold an in-depth discussion on how to settlepeace on the Korean peninsula.The last three sessions on the peace regime on the Korean peninsula, scheduled for June 28,are: “Is Peace on the Korean Peninsula Impossible?” (organized by IFANS, the Korea NationalDiplomatic Academy), “Era of Negotiations and the Korean Diplomacy” (Korean Council onForeign Relations), and “Denuclearization and Confidence Building Measures” (KoreaInstitute for Defense Analyses).The discussion session organized by the Korean Council on Foreign Relations andparticipated in by Han Taekyu, Chairman of Korean Council on Foreign Relations,Byun DaeHo, former Korean ambassador to the Rep. of Croatia and Kang Keuntaek , former Korean ambassador to Ukraine, among others will focus on theagenda Korean diplomacy might face in the future and how to deal with this.
