[Special Lecture by Audrey Azoulay] UNESCO’s Unique Mandate for Peace and Development: Multilateral Cooperation through Education, Culture and the Sciences		 Tamna A
At the moment of its foundation after World War II, UNESCO was entrusted with a unique mission inscribed in its Constitution: “it is in the minds of men and women that the defences of peace must be constructed.” UNESCO has been carrying out this mission for over 70 years now, through education, culture, and the sciences, reaching out to local populations in every region of the world. The challenges faced by humanity at the beginning of this 21st century are no longer the same as those in 1945. But the need for multilateral cooperation is just as urgent. It is crucial to maintain and reinforce this cooperation, and to find original and innovative means to guarantee peace and sustainable development. There is no other alternative.

제2차 세계대전 후 유네스코가 창설되었을 당시 제정된 헌장에 명시된 대로 유네스코는 고유의 사명을 부여받았다. 즉 “인간의 마음속에 평화의 방벽을 세우는 것”이다. 유네스코는 지금까지 70년 넘게 교육, 문화, 과학을 통해 이러한 임무를 수행해왔고 전 세계 각 지역의 주민들에게 다가갔다. 21세기 초에 인류가 직면한 도전은 1945년의 도전과는 같지 않다. 그러나 다자간 협력의 필요성은 마찬가지로 긴급히 요구된다. 이러한 협력을 유지·강화하고, 평화와 지속가능한 발전을 보장하는 독창적이고 혁신적인 수단을 발견하는 것이 중요하며 그 외 다른 대안은 없다.
