[제주평화연구원/코리아중앙데일리 Jeju Peace Institute/Korea JoongAng Daily] A historic inter-Korean summit was held at the end of April, followed by the first U.S.-North Korea summit, setting track a strategy toward bringing about denuclearization and a permanent and robust peace regime Korean Peninsula. Under the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration, the South and North Korean leaders vowed that there would be no more war on the Korean Peninsula, following a period of exacerbated tensions over the recent past years. A landmark first summit between North Korea and the United States scheduled for June 12 in Singapore is expected to bring about some sort of “big deal” on denuclearization. The role of diplomacy will play an especially vital role in the coming months as the inter-Korean dialogue expands to include other six-party talk nations and those countries with interest in the region. This session will provide a venue for ambassadors to weigh in on how the international community, especially through diplomatic overtures, can contribute to the establishment of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia amid shifting dynamics in the region, and in the spirit of carrying on with the current momentum of dialogue. 역사적인 남북 정상회담에 이어 사상 첫 북미 정상회담이 확정되며 한반도 비핵화와 평화 체제 구축을 위한 초석이 마련되고 있다. 4.27 판문점선언을 통해 남북한 지도자들은 지난 수년간 경직된 남북 긴장 완화와 더불어 한반도에 더이상 전쟁은 없을 것이라고 약속했다. 남북한 대화가 6자회담 국가 및 역내 관심 국가 간 대화로 확대될 수 있는 가능성이 고조됨에 따라 외교의 중요성과 역할은 더욱 강조되고 있다. 또한, 상징적인 첫 북미 정상회담을 통해 한반도 비핵화에도 일정 성과를 거둘 것이라는 기대가 모아지고 있다. 본 라운드테이블은 주요국 주한 외교대사를 초청해 급변하는 역내 정세와 정상회담의 취지에 발맞춰, 국제 공동체가 한반도와 동북아 평화 정착 및 안정을 위해 기여할 수 있는 바를 외교적 접근 측면에서 살펴보는 자리를 갖고자 한다.
