Dr. CHEON Myeongguk is currently working at Korea Institute for Defense Analyses(KIDA) as an ROK army officer. His research interests are mainly North Korea’s military issues derived from WMD threats such as nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missiles. Deterrence, protection, counter measures, consequence management, and arms control are also included in his research scopes. Dr. CHEON’s military careers cover WMD related policy planning and implementation for the Ministry of National Defense(MND) and providing nuclear related technical assistance and expertise for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MOFA) pursuing to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. He has participated in various ROK-US security related consultations such as Extended Deterrence Policy Committee(EDPC), Deterrence Strategy Committee(DSC), and Bio-Defense Task Force(BDTF) mainly dealing with North Korea’s WMD threats. From 2012 to 2014, he was in charge of planning and organizing a ROK-US Joint Bio-Defense Exercise, named as Able Response(AR), for the improvement of national bio-defense capability.
Dr CHEON’s academic backgrounds are mainly in science and engineering, BS in physics, MS and PhD in nuclear engineering.


천명국 박사는 한국 국방 연구원(KIDA)에서 육군 장교로 근무하고 있다. 그의 연구 주제는 핵, 화학, 생화학 무기, 탄도 미사일 등 대량 살상 무기 위협과 관련된 북한의 군사 문제이다. 또한 연구 범위에는 억제, 방호, 위기 관리, 군비통제 등을 포함한다. 군 경력은 국방부의 대량 살상 무기 정책 기획, 외교부에 핵 관련 기술 지원 및 자문 제공을 비롯해 EDPC, DSC, BDTF 등 다양한 한미 안보 관련 협의에도 참여했다. 2012년부터 2014년까지 생물 방어 능력 향상을 위한 한미 생물 방어 훈련을 기획·조직했다. 천명국 박사는 물리학 학사, 핵 공학 석‧박사학위를 수여했다.
