Rakesh Sood joined the diplomatic service in 1976 and served in the Indian missions in Brussels, Dakar, Geneva, and Islamabad in different capacities and also as Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington. In Delhi, Ambassador Sood served as Director (Disarmament) and set up the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division which he led for eight years till end of 2000 as Joint Secretary (D&ISA), in the Foreign Ministry. During this period, he was responsible for multilateral disarmament negotiations, bilateral dialogues on CBMs with Pakistan, strategic dialogues with other countries especially after the nuclear tests in 1998, and India’s role in the ARF.
Subsequently, he has served as Ambassador and PR to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva (2001-04), Ambassador to Afghanistan (2005-08), Ambassador to Nepal (2008-11) and Ambassador to France (2011-13).
In September 2013, Ambassador Rakesh Sood was appointed Special Envoy of the Prime Minister for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Issues; he held this position till May 2014, when he retired from government.
He is currently Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation.

라케쉬 수드는 1976년부터 외교에 종사하여 주 브뤼셀, 다카르, 제네바 그리고 이슬라마바드의 인도 대사관에서 여러 직책을 거쳤으며 워싱턴에서 수석 부차관보를 지냈다. 또한 수드 대사는 델리에서 군축 관련 총책임자이자 외무부의 비서실장으로 2000년까지 8년동안 국제안보문제부서(D&ISA)를 개설하고 이끌었다. 이 기간 동안 다자간의 군축 협상, 파키스탄과 신뢰구축을 위한 양자간의 대화, 1998년 핵실험 후부터 본격적으로 진행된 타국과의 전략적 대화 그리고 ARF에서 인도의 역할 등의 문제를 도맡았다.
그 후 제네바의 대사이자2001-2004년에 열린 군축회의 비례대표, 주 아프가니스탄 대사(2005-08), 주 네팔 대사(2008-11) 그리고 주 프랑스 대사(2011-13)를 역임했다.
2013년 9월에 수드 대사는 군비축소 및 비핵화 문제의 수상 특사로 선정되어 2014년 5월까지 활동하다 정부에서 은퇴했다. 현재는 옵서버연구재단에서 선임연구원을 지내고 있다.
