He has taught comparative politics, Southeast Asian politics, and political anthropology at Sogang University, Seoul, for twenty-seven years. He obtained his Ph.D. from Yale in 1989 with a study on the origin and formation of big business in Indonesia. He has served as Director of the Institute for East Asian Studies (SIEAS) at the university since 2001 until now. He is a founding co-chairperson in the editorial board of TRaNS: Trans-Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia published by the Cambridge University Press. He is also a founding member of the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies (KASEAS), where he is currently serving as President, as well as the Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (KISEAS), the two most important associations of scholars specializing on Southeast Asian Studies.

서울대학교 법과대학을 졸업하고 동 대학원 정치학 석사과정을 이수하였다. 1980년 도미하여 예일대학교에서 정치학을 공부하였으며, 1989년에는 인도네시아의 재벌형성과 국가-자본 관계를 주제로 박사학위를 취득하였다. 1990년부터 지금까지 서강대학교 정치외교학과에서 비교정치론, 동남아정치론, 정치인류학 등을 가르치고 있다. 2001년부터 서강대 동아연구소 소장으로 재임하면서 동아시아연구의 외연을 동남아시아로 확대하는 데 앞장섰으며, 2008년에는 인문한국(HK) 지원사업에 선정되어 10명의 동남아 전공 학자들과 함께 “열린 체계로서 동남아: 지역연구의 대중적 확산과 세계적 소통”을 대주제로 10년간의 공동연구를 수행 중이다. 2013년부터 케임브리지대학 출판사가 발간하는 TRaNS: Trans-Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia의 공동편집위원장을 맡고 있다. 사단법인 한국동남아연구소 이사장을 재임한 바 있으며, 2015년 6월 제13대 한국동남아학회 회장에 선출되어 2년 임기의 회장직을 수행 중에 있다.
