Mr. Marc Knapper, a member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, began his tenure as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on January 20, 2017. Prior to that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Seoul since April 2015. Before his arrival in the Republic of Korea, he was the Director of the Department of State’s Office of India Affairs, and before that he served as the Director of Japanese Affairs. Earlier assignments include serving as Political Counselor in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad; as Deputy Chief of the Political Section at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo; and as Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi.
Mr. Knapper brings an extensive knowledge of the Republic of Korea and the Asia-Pacific region to his current assignment, having served twice at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul – first between 1993 and 1995, and again between 1997 and 2001. He has also completed assignments in the Department of State’s Office for Chinese and Mongolian Affairs, and during an early assignment in Tokyo, he served as aide to Ambassador Walter Mondale. Mr. Knapper has twice traveled to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for official purposes, once in 1997 as the State Department representative to the Spent Fuel Team at the Yongbyon nuclear facility, and again in 2000 as part of the advance team for then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s visit to Pyongyang.
Mr. Knapper is the recipient of a number of awards from the U.S. Department of State, including Linguist of the Year and three Superior Honor Awards. He is a summa cum laude graduate from Princeton University, with a BA in Politics and a minor in East Asian Studies. After graduation, he studied for two years at the University of Tokyo as a graduate research student. He is also a graduate of Middlebury College’s intensive Japanese program, the Army War College, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seminar XXI course. Mr. Knapper speaks Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese.
A native of Los Angeles, Mr. Knapper is married to Suzuko Knapper and they have one son, Alex, who is 16.
<BR><BR>미 국무부 외교국 소속 마크 내퍼는 2017년 1월 20일부터 주한 미국대사관 대사 대리로서 업무를 시작하였다. 2015년 4월 대사관 차석으로 한국 근무를 시작하기 전에는 국무부 일본과장 및 인도과장을 역임하였으며, 초기에는 주이라크 미국대사관 소속 정무참사관, 주일 미국대사관 정치과장보, 그리고 주베트남 미국대사관 소속 정무참사관 등의 역할을 수행하였다.
1993년부터 1995년, 그리고 1997년 부터 2001년의 기간 동안 주한 미국대사관에서 근무한 그는 대한민국 및 아시아-태평양 지역에 대한 광범위한 지식을 가지고 있다. 또한 그는 국무부 중국과 및 몽골과에서 근무한 경험이 있으며 일본에서의 근무 당시 특별보좌관의 직책을 역임하여 월터 먼데일 대사를 보좌하였다. 그 외에도 그는 1997년 영변 핵시설 사용후 핵연료팀의 국무부 대표로, 그리고 2000년 당시 매들린 올브라이트 국무장관 평양 방문 선행팀의 일원으로서 공적 업무차 북한을 두 차례 방문한 경험이 있다.
국무부는 마크 내퍼에게 올해의 어학자상 및 세 차례에 걸친 최고 명예 표창 등을 포함한 여러 표창을 수여했다. 프린스턴대학교에서 정치학을 전공한 그는 동아시아학을 부전공하여 수석으로 졸업하였다. 이후 동경대학교에서 대학원 연구생으로서 2년간 재학하였으며, 미들버리대학교의 집중 일본어 과정, 미육군 대학원, 그리고 매사추세츠공과대학교의 세미나 과정을 마쳤다. 그는 한국어, 일본어, 베트남어에 능통하다.
로스엔젤레스 출신인 마크 내퍼는 부인인 스즈코 내퍼와 슬하에 16세인 아들 알렉스를 두었다.
