변영철 교수는 제주대학교 컴퓨터공학과에 교수로 재직 중이다. 연구 분야로서 인공지능, 머신러닝 & 딥러닝, 데이터 공학이 있으며, 현재 머신러닝 연구실을 지도하고 있다. 현재 정보기술연구소의 소장, 첨단기술연구소 소장을 역임하고 있다. 연구 이외에도 CNSI, ICESI 국제학술대회를 조직하여 운영하고 있으며, 여러 워크샵 체어, 프로그램 체어 세션 체어로 활동하고 있고, 또한 제주은행 사외이사로 활동하고 있다. 변영철 교수는 제주에서 태어났고 제주대학교 정보공학과 학사, 연세대학교 석사, 연세대학교 박사 학위를 받았다. 삼성전자에서 특임 강사로 활동하였고 전자통신연구원에서 선임연구원으로 재직하다가 2003년에 제주대학교 교수로 부임하였다.

Dr. Yungcheol Byun is a full professor at the Computer Engineering Department (CE) at Jeju National University. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Deep Learning, and Data Engineering. He directs the Machine Learning Laboratory at the CE department. Recently, He is currently serving as a director of Information Science Technology Laboratory, and other academic societies. Outside of his research activities, Dr. Byun has been hosting an international conference, CNSI (Computer, Network, Systems, and Industrial Engineering), ICESI (Electric Vehicle, Smart Grid, and Information Technology), and also serving as a conference and workshop chair, program chair, and session chair in various kinds of international conferences and workshops. Dr. Byun was born in Jeju, Korea, and received his Ph.D. and MS from Yonsei University in 1995 and 2001 respectively, and BS from Jeju National University in 1993. Before joining Jeju National University, he worked as a special lecturer in SAMSUNG Electronics in 2000 and 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he was a senior researcher of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. He was promoted to join Jeju National University as an assistant professor in 2003.
