가렛 에반스 교수는 2010년 이래 호주국립대학교 총장을 역임하고 있으며, 호크와 키팅 수상 행정부에서 13년간 각료로 근무해, 1984년부터 1987년까지 법무부 장관, 자원 에너지 장관, 교통 통신 장관을 맡고 1988년부터 1996년까지 외교부장관으로서 핵무기 폐기를 위한 캔버라 위원회를 착수시켰다. 정계에서 은퇴한 이후, 2000년부터 2009년까지 브뤼셀에 본부를 둔 국제위기감시기구 총장과 국가주권중재위원회(International commissions on Intervention and State Sovereignty), 핵비확산과 군축에 관한 국제위임회(Nuclear Non-Poliferation and Disarmament) 공동의장을 역임하였다.

Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA FAIIA has been Chancellor of the Australian National University since January 2010. He was a Cabinet Minister in the Hawke and Keating Labor Governments from 1983-96, in the posts of Attorney General, Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Transport and Communications and - from 1988-96 - Foreign Minister. He was President and CEO of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, the independent global conflict prevention and resolution organization, from 2000 to 2009, and has chaired two major international commissions, on Intervention and State Sovereignty in 2001, and Nuclear Non-Poliferation and Disarmament in 2009.
