김종화 교수는 현재 제주한라대학교 컴퓨터과학 및 정보통신전공 교수이며, 미래문화기술연구단(MCTRI) 단장, 제주인공지능연구소(CAII) 소장을 역임하고 있다. 그는 가천대학교에서 전자공학을 전공하고, 독일 베를린 공대(Technische Universitaet Berlin)에서 정보통신공학 박사 학위를 취득하였고, 2010년에는 독일 정교수자격박사학위인 Habilitation Dr. 학위를 독일 아욱스부르크대학(Universitaet Augsburg)에서 취득하였다. 아욱스부르크대학에서 그는 2017년까지 응용컴퓨터과학부 교수로 재직하였으며, 현재 많은 국제 연구기관, 학회 및 정부기관의 자문위원으로 활발히 활동하고 있다. 김종화 교수의 관심연구분야는 감성컴퓨팅, 인공지능, 긍정컴퓨팅 및 신경생리학적 UX 모델링을 포함한다. 그는 특히 HUMAINE, CALLAS, CEEDS 및 METABO와 같은 다수의 EU IST 프로젝트를 수행하면서 다양한 국제 연구팀을 이끌었으며, 최근에는 자동 통증인식 시스템 개발을 위한 프로젝트 SenseEmotion을 포함하여, 일련의 독일 국가연구프로젝트들을 성공적으로 마쳤다.

Jonghwa KIM is a full Professor of Computer Science and ICT at the Cheju Halla University, Korea, Head of the Cheju Artificial Intelligence Institute (CAII), the Chief Director of Mirae Culture Technology Research Initiative (MCTRI). He received the BS and MS degree in Electronic Engineering from the Gachon University, Korea, and the Ph.D. degree in Communication Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, 2003. He received the Habilitation Dr. degree (venia legendi) in Computer Science in 2010 from the University Augsburg, Germany, where he was a Professor of Applied Computer Science until 2017. Jonghwa Kim serves on the boards of numerous international research institutes, scientific societies, and governmental organizations. His research interests include affective computing, artificial intelligence, positive computing, and neurophysiological UX modeling. He led international research teams in various European IST projects such as HUMAINE, CALLAS, CEEDS, and METABO. Recently he successfully finished the series of German national research projects such as SenseEmotion, where he led the development of automatic pain recognition system.
