1996년에 미국 위스콘신 대학교에서 정책학 석사학위를 받았으며, 2016년에는 한양대학교 환경공학 박사학위를 받았다. 1986년 행정고시에 합격한 후 환경분야에서 약 30년간 근무하였다. 환경부에 재직 중 자연보전국장, 환경정책관, 수도권대기환경청장을 역임하였다. 2014년 12월부터 2017년 5월까지 대통령비서실의 기후환경비서관으로 근무하였다. 2008년 8월부터 2011년 7월까지 3년동안 유엔환경계획 아시아태평양지역사무소에서 근무하면서 아시아태평양지역의 환경보전을 위해 노력하였다. 2017년 8월부터 서울대학교 그린에코공학연구소에서 교수로 환경관련 연구를 위해 노력하고 있다.

Chan Hee LEE has various educational backgrounds. He received B.A. in public administration in Yeongnam University, Korea, M.A in development policy and administration in University of Wisconsin in Madison, U.S.A, and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering in Hanyang University, Korea. After he passed the Higher Civil Service Examination in 1986, he had worked for about 30 years as a governmental official for environment. During that period, he served as Director General of Natural Environmental Preservation Bureau, Environmental Policy Bureau and Metropolitan Environmental Management Office of the Ministry of Environment of Korea. He also worked as a senior programme officer of UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific from August 2008 to July 2011. He worked as the climate and environment secretary to the President for 2 and half years from December 2014. Now he has been working at the Research Institute of Green Eco Engineering of Seoul National University since August 2017.
