현재 이화여자대학교 여성학과 교수이고, 이화여대 한국여성연구원, 아시아여성학센터, 교양교육원 원장을 역임했다. 이화여자대학교 영문학과를 졸업했고, 서울대학교에서 인류학 석사, 미국 캘리포니아 대학에서 인류학 박사를 받았다. 한국여성학회 회장을 역임했고, 현재 아시아여성학회 회장이고, AJWS (Asian Journal of Women's Studies)의 편집장이다. 1995년에 이화여대에 아시아여성학 센터가 만들어진 이래 아시아여성학자들과의 네트워킹, 아시아 8개국 여성학 교과서 편집, “서구여성학”에 대한 대안지식으로 “아시아여성학”이란 범주를 만들어내는 수많은 학술회의를 주최했고, 아시아 여성지성공동체를 만드는데 주요한 역할을 해왔다. 이화여대 아시아여성학센타 소장 재직 시 2005년에 세계여성학대회를 주최했고, 사무총장을 역임했다. 2004년에는 일본 오차노미즈 대학에서 객원교수로 초대받았고, 2015년에는 미국 코넬 대학에서 개원교수로 초대받았다. 새로운 학문적 담론을 만드는 여성운동, 문화운동 등 다양한 활동에 참가하여왔고, 오랫동안 <또하나의 문화>의 이사이고, 서울국제여성영화제의 이사장이다. 여성과 몸, 여성학 이론, 아시아 여성 연구, 지구화, 이주, 신여성과 탈식민지식, 여성과 시민권, 최근 세계화와 토착(전통) 지식과의 관계 등이 주요 연구 관심이다. 한글과 영어로 된 다수의 논문과 책이 있다. 최근 4.3 관련 연구를 수행하고 있고, 한글과 영어로 된 “4.3 홀어멍의 말하기와 몸의 정치” 등의 논문을 썼다.

Eun-Shil Kim is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Women's Studies at Ewha Womans University. She was the Director of the Asian Center for Women’s Studies and the Director of Korean Women Institute at Ewha Womans University for many years. She is an Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Women’s Studies (AJWS) and is currently serving as President of the Asian Association of Women's Studies (AAWS). Through the years, she has been involved in developing the intellectual community of feminist scholars in Asia since 1995 and has done research in the field of women’s bodies, sexuality, modernity, nationalism, globalization, migration, feminist knowledge production, post-development issues. and violence against women during the war. She received her Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology from the University of California, San Francisco. She worked as the Secretary-General for the 2005 Interdisciplinary Congress on Women. She published many articles (e.g. “The Discourse of Nationalism and Women,” “The Cultural Logic of the Korean Modernization Project and its Gender Politics,” “Itaewon as an Alien Space within the Nation-State and a Place in the Globalization Era,” “The Formation of Public Sphere and Gender Politics during the Nation-Building Period of the First Republic of South Korea in the 1950s,” "The Politics of Institutionalizing Feminist Knowledge: Discussing 'Asian Women's Studies in South Korea," ”The Politics of the Jeju 4.3 Holeomeong Bodies: “Speaking” and Emotion as Embodied Language", etc.) and books (e.g. Women’s Bodies/the Cultural Politics of Bodies, co-authored books such as Fascism Within Us, Locational Feminisms in the Age of Globalization, Noh Muhyun Government’s Experiments: Unfinished Reform, etc).
